Lipotransference in Merida
What Is It?
Lipotransference, also known as fat transfer or fat grafting, is a cosmetic and reconstructive medical procedure that involves transferring a patient’s own fat from one part of their body to another. This technique is used to restore or enhance the volume, shape, or contours of specific areas. It is considered a natural alternative to synthetic fillers or implants because it uses the patient’s tissue, reducing the risk of allergic reactions or rejection.
During lipotransference, fat is typically removed from areas where it is more abundant, such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips, and is then carefully prepared and reinjected into the desired area. Common areas for enhancement include the face, breasts, buttocks, or hands.
Lipotransference is widely recognized for its dual benefits—it simultaneously contours the donor site while adding volume to the target area. It is used in both aesthetic and medical contexts, such as for correcting asymmetries, restoring tissue lost due to trauma, or enhancing cosmetic appeal.
How Is It Carried Out?
The lipotransference procedure generally follows three main steps:
- Harvesting Fat is extracted from the donor site using liposuction. This is done through a small incision where a thin, hollow tube (cannula) is inserted to gently remove fat cells. A local anesthetic or sedation is usually applied depending on the extent of the procedure.
- Processing The harvested fat is purified to remove unwanted components like blood, oils, or fluids. This is done using centrifugation or filtration, ensuring only healthy fat cells are used for reinjection.
- Injection The processed fat is carefully injected into the target area in small amounts. The surgeon uses a fine needle or cannula to ensure even distribution and create a natural appearance.
This procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting. Minimally invasive techniques are often employed, leading to smaller scars and shorter recovery times.
What Are the Most Common Diagnoses That Resort to This Type of Procedure?
Lipotransference is commonly used for the following purposes:
- Facial volume loss: Restoring fullness to areas affected by aging, such as cheeks, under-eye hollows, or nasolabial folds.
- Breast reconstruction: Enhancing volume after a mastectomy or correcting breast asymmetry.
- Buttock augmentation: Improving the shape or size of the buttocks without the need for implants (commonly referred to as the Brazilian butt lift).
- Hand rejuvenation: Reducing the appearance of veins and tendons by adding volume to aging hands.
- Scar revision: Filling depressed scars caused by injury, surgery, or acne.
- Post-trauma or deformity correction: Restoring natural contours lost due to trauma, burns, or congenital conditions.
- Gender-affirming procedures: Creating a more feminine or masculine appearance as part of gender-affirming surgeries.
Who Are Candidates for This Procedure?
Candidates for lipotransference are typically individuals who are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and possess sufficient fat deposits for harvesting. The procedure is not recommended for individuals with significant health risks, severe skin laxity, or those seeking dramatic volume increases that may require other techniques.
How Long Does This Type of Procedure Take?
The duration of lipotransference depends on the area being treated and the amount of fat transferred. In most cases, the procedure lasts between 1 to 4 hours. More complex cases or those involving multiple areas may take longer.
Recovery Times
Recovery times vary based on the extent of the procedure and the areas treated. Most patients experience mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort for 1 to 2 weeks. Full recovery, including the resolution of swelling and the stabilization of results, typically occurs within 1 to 3 months. Factors such as the patient’s health, lifestyle, and adherence to post-operative care can affect recovery time.
Results
The results of lipotransference are generally long-lasting and natural-looking, as the transferred fat integrates with the surrounding tissues. However, not all the injected fat survives; typically, 50-70% of the fat remains permanently, while the rest is naturally absorbed by the body. Follow-up procedures may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.
Results depend on the individual’s anatomy, the amount of fat transferred, and the surgeon’s skill. When performed correctly, lipotransference can provide a subtle yet significant enhancement with minimal risk of complications.
