How is it carried out?
There are two primary techniques for performing gluteoplasty:
- Buttock Implants: This method involves the surgical insertion of silicone implants into the buttocks. The surgeon makes an incision either in the crease between the buttocks or at the top of the buttocks, creating a pocket in the gluteal muscle where the implant is placed. The incision is then closed with sutures.
- Fat Grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift): This minimally invasive technique uses the patient’s own fat to enhance the buttocks. Fat is liposuctioned from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, purified, and then injected into specific areas of the buttocks to achieve the desired shape and volume. The benefits of this method include a more natural look and feel, as well as the additional contouring of the donor areas.

Who are candidates for this procedure?

Additionally, candidates for the fat grafting technique must have sufficient fat stores in other areas of their body to use for the procedure.
How long does this type of procedure take?
The duration of a gluteoplasty procedure varies depending on the technique used and the extent of the surgery. Generally, the procedure takes between 2 to 4 hours. This includes the time needed for anesthesia, the surgery itself, and the initial recovery period in the operating room.
What is the recovery time?
Recovery time after gluteoplasty can vary based on the individual and the specific method used. On average, patients can expect the following:
- Buttock Implants: Most patients need about 2 to 4 weeks to return to normal daily activities. Strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided for at least 6 to 8 weeks.
- Fat Grafting: Recovery is typically shorter, with most patients resuming normal activities within 2 weeks. However, sitting directly on the buttocks should be avoided for at least 2 weeks to ensure proper fat grafting results.
It is important to note that individual recovery times can vary based on the patient’s overall health, adherence to post-operative care instructions, and the complexity of the procedure.
Results
The results of gluteoplasty can be quite dramatic, providing a more aesthetically pleasing and balanced appearance of the buttocks and overall body contour. The final results will be visible after the initial swelling subsides, which can take several weeks to months. For buttock implants, the results are long-lasting, although they may require revision surgery in the future. For fat grafting, some of the injected fat may be reabsorbed by the body over time, but the remaining fat should provide a permanent enhancement.
